Binoculars With ZoomZoom binoculars are identified by their rating system, whereas, the first set of values (actually two numbers) signify the zooming power range of the unit. As an example; a 10-30 X 50 binocular rating indicates that this particular unit has a varying range of magnification from 10 through 30. That is an object can be seen as 10 times closer than with the naked eye - up to 30 times closer. Generally compact zoom binoculars are used to scan for your target using the lower value of magnification and then, when the object is located, to zoom to a higher magnification in order to observe your target in more close up detail. Most binoculars with zoom are also smaller, compact models. Although those used for astronomy viewing can be fairly large and probably will require a tripod to stablize the image. The zooming process often uses a physical flexible linkage band that causes both ocular lens (the lens nearest your eyes) to move in synchronization through the changes in power. Recall that a binocular is actually two lens combined into one viewing mechanism. This synchronization is necessary as both the right and left ocular lens must remain at the same power of magnification. Otherwise you will have a fuzzy or unclear image that you are viewing. One should also note the operations of this zooming process. Is the focusing quick and automatic? Or is it a slow and manual process? High powered zoom binoculars are probably most beneficial in astronomy - and then with the use of a tripod. Under these operations, as you increase the magnification level, your part of sky, or star, remains steady and viewable. Without a tripod, a hand held high powered zoom binocular will be very difficult to hold steady enough for comfortable viewing. Companies like Bushnell and Nikon are some that make quality compact zoom binoculars.
